State Laws that Affect the Way your Data is Secured
Privacy and breach notification laws have been passed throughout much of the United States. Many of those laws started in California. We highlight those because they are an example of most other States' laws.
One law defines the appropriate use of a social security number. While this law only affects businesses in California is provides good guidelines for all companies. This law went into effect July 1, 2002.
This law buried in Section 226 of California's Labor Code requires employers to print only the last four digits of an employee's social security number on pay stubs or other itemized statements or else use a different employee identifier. Employers have until January 1, 2008 to comply.The next law requires that any company that does business in California notifies any California resident of any breach or suspected breach involving their private data. This law went into effect July 1, 2003. Most other States also have notification laws. This site keeps track of the States that have passed notification laws.
